These images were created through collage with my family photos from Cuba. The project explores the relationship I have with a country I’ve never been to but know intimately, and only through my family’s memories. The photos are from a time before my grandparents were exiled from their country. I grew up hearing stories of this place every night at dinner, becoming familiar with a Cuba that no longer exists. Cuba today is unrecognizable to the one my grandparents grew up in, the one in my head. From the foundation of my family’s country, a completely different one now exists. I use these family photos in a similar way; manipulating them and breaking them down, then rebuilding them back into something completely different. This project explores the nostalgia and love I have for something that I’ve only experienced through other people’s memories.
